Havenwood seeks to fulfill our Lord's command to "love your neighbor." In order to help people in need, we are involved with many worthwhile organizations close to home, across the country, and around the world. Our congregation supports a number of these organizations financially. In addition, we participate in numerous hands-on activities. Within our church, the groups that are especially active in mission are the Board of Deacons, the Presbyterian Women, the Youth, and the Session. All of their efforts are successful because of the generous response of our church members. Board of Deacons The Deacons coordinate an American Red Cross Blood Drive in February, hold a food drive in May for the Assistance Center of Towson Churches (ACTC), prepare Thanksgiving baskets for ACTC in November, and collect toys in December for the McKim Community Center. They also make a monetary contribution to ACTC every month. The Deacons' Emergency Assistance Fund provides financial assistance to members of the church or community when special requests are made, and the Havenwood Friends Committee provides special needs, such as meals, for church members. Presbyterian Women The Women coordinate a Blanket Sunday in February for Church World Service, collect Coats for Kids in October, sponsor participants in "Make Tracks for ACTS" in October, and provide Christmas gifts and clothing for four children at Villa Maria in December. Campbell Soup labels are collected year-round to benefit the Davis-Stuart Home. Offerings from Circle members and profits from fundraisers allow the Women to financially support Meals on Wheels, Active Coalition for Transitional Services (ACTS) and the Fuel Fund. Youth Youth Havenwood children of all ages have the opportunity to help others. The Church School offering goes to World Vision to sponsor a girl in Haiti, and the children communicate with her several times a year. The Vacation Bible School offering is donated to the Heifer Project International. Each of our three youth groups has its own mission project. First Fellowship participates in the "Souper Bowl' in January to benefit the Light Street Presbyterian Church Soup Kitchen. Mid-High Fellowship sends toys to the Sunset Gap Community Center Christmas Shop in December, and Senior High Fellowship spends a week in Tennessee each summer renovating homes close to the Sunset Gap Community Center. The youth groups also join together for the Church World Service's CROP Walk in October. Session The Mission Committee sponsors several ongoing projects. Monthly visits are made to serve lunch at the Light Street Presbyterian Church Soup Kitchen, quarterly visits are made to rehab homes for Light Street Housing, and handmade, wash-able blankets are always accepted for Project Linus. In March, Health Kits are assembled for Church World Service. On Palm Sunday, the Stewardship Committee sponsors One Great Hour of Sharing, a special offering for the Presbyterian Church. A minimum of 10% of the general church budget is designated for mission, with an emphasis on financially supporting those organizations in which there is also personal participation.
