Havenwood seeks to fulfill our Lord's command to "love your neighbor." In order to help people in need, we are involved with many worthwhile organizations close to home, across the country, and around the world. Our congregation supports a number of these organizations financially. In addition, we participate in numerous hands-on activities. Within our church, the groups that are especially active in mission are the Board of Deacons, the Presbyterian Women, the Youth, and the Session. All of their efforts are successful because of the generous response of our church members.
The Mission Committee sponsors several ongoing projects. Handmade, washable blankets are made and donated to Project Linus. In March, Health Kits are assembled for Church World Service. On Palm Sunday, the Stewardship Committee sponsors One Great Hour of Sharing, a special offering for the Presbyterian Church. A portion of the general church budget is designated for mission, with an emphasis on financially supporting those organizations in which we also participate as individuals. Organizations supported by Havenwood are listed above.
The Deacons coordinate an American Red Cross Blood Drive, hold a food drive in May for the Assistance Center of Towson Churches (ACTC) and prepare Thanksgiving baskets for ACTC in November. They also make a food and monetary contribution to ACTC every month. The Deacons' Emergency Assistance Fund provides financial assistance to members of the church or community when special requests are made, and the Havenwood Friends Committee provides special needs, such as meals, for church members.
The Women coordinate a Blanket Sunday in February for Church World Service, and provide Christmas gifts and clothing for four children at St. Vincent's Villa in December. Offerings from Circle members and profits from fundraisers allow the Women to financially support selected mission projects.
Havenwood youth have the opportunity to help others in many ways, including participating in "Souper Bowl of Caring" (supporting local soup kitchens) and a "Fat Tuesday" pancake supper (supporting the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance). The Senior High Fellowship spends a week in Cosby, Tennessee, renovating homes through the Sunset Gap Community Center during the summer. The youth group also walks for the Church World Service's C.R.O.P. Walk in the fall.
