Music

All members of the church are welcome to participate in any choir. No experience is needed. Instruction in rhythm and theory is freely offered.

YOUTH CHOIR (Elementary and Mid Hi Children) The Youth Choir is composed of singers from second grade through middle school. The choir rehearses every Sunday after church and sings an anthem once a month, with the exception of the summer months, and at special services such as Christmas Eve, Palm Sunday and Easter. Anyone in this age group who enjoys singing is invited to join the group.

PSALM CHOIR (Mid Hi and Sr. Hi Youth) The Psalm Choir is a choir for Mid. Hi. and Sr. Hi. young people. The choir offers vocal and instrumental music or a combination of both for the worship service once each quarter throughout the year, with the exception of the summer months, and for Easter and Christmas Eve. The choir rehearses after church on Sundays from October through December, and during March and April. Contemporary and upbeat music of interest to the young people is usually the focus for this group.

CHANCEL CHOIR (Adults) The Chancel Choir provides music for the Sunday service from September to June. In addition, the choir sings for other services such as Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, Thanksgiving Eve and sings every fall at the Presbyterian Home of Maryland. The choir rehearses each Wednesday from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m.

HANDBELL CHOIR (Sr. Hi and Adults) The Handbell Choir participates in worship, ringing monthly throughout the year with the exception of the summer months. The choir also participates in combined anthems with the Chancel Choir. In addition, the choir has rung for special occasions such as the Advent Dinner, the Palm Sunday Dinner, the Presbyterian Home of Maryland, Presbyterian Women functions and for Easter and Christmas Eve services. Presently, there are two groups of dedicated members which ring our three-octaves of handbells. Both groups rehearse regularly on Wednesday evenings. Session I rehearses from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., and Session II rehearses from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Instruction in handbell techniques is part of our regular rehearsal format.

THE SESSION

The Session of the Havenwood Presbyterian Church consists of twenty-one members, led by the Pastor who serves as Moderator. Members serve as Elders and Trustees. The congregation elects Session Members for a three-year term; one third (seven) are elected every year. Regular meetings are held once a month on the fourth Monday. Special meetings are called whenever necessary.

The Elders provide leadership, government and discipline. They are responsible for the life and faith of the church congregation and the church at large. The Elders approve and assist at all baptisms, receive new members, approve the use of the church facilities, approve programs operated by church groups, serve communion and assist in worship services. Session members are expected to be persons of faith and their life should be a demonstration of Christian Gospel. The Elders serve as chairs of various committees to provide leadership and help to govern the church.

THE DEACONS

The Board of Deacons of Havenwood Church develops, or coordinates the community mission services and assistance programs of the congregation. Deacons are elected by the congregation for staggered three year terms.
